So much for going back to Makepeace & Grimes. Having got quite excited after spending some time yesterday developing the characters for my next Post Apoc series, I decided to begin work on chapter 1 so I can get my co-writer’s opinion and the thoughts of our beta readers.

Why is Chapter 1 of Book 1 so crucial?

First and foremost because if the reader isn’t entranced by the first chapter (the first sentence, the first paragraph, the first page) then they will likely never make it to chapter 2, let alone the end of the book. And if they don’t finish book 1, they’re not going to buy book 2.
The second reason is that the premise is set up in chapter 1 of the first book. With post apoc, we need to introduce the reason for the end of the world and the principle characters. Is the premise interesting enough to keep readers reading? Does it have the heft to carry a six book series?
So, I decided that I’d rather get Chapter 1 done and out there, so I can incorporate feedback before pressing on with that book. In the meantime, I’ll be finishing M&G 2.
The chapter’s half done, so I should be able to finish it tomorrow.
