Today, my characters found themselves in the grounds of Portsmouth Cathedral looking out at a pub called The Dolphin that was founded in 1716. This pub was one of the only buildings to survive the bombing campaign of the Second World War – it’s pretty close to the naval dockyard.
I also needed to come up with a realistic pub meal, so I found one in Nicholas Nickleby: "hot beef-steak pudding and potatoes". Sounds delicious. Southsea is better known for its seafood and I remember stopping at a shack there to buy jellied eels for my former father-in-law. Not that I’d eat it. It looked utterly disgusting!
